WHAT TO EXPECT

What Does a Comprehensive Eye Exam Include?

A routine exam at Kona Eye Care evaluates both your clear vision prescription and the microscopic health of your ocular structures.

1. Visual Acuity & Refraction

Precise measurement of nearsightedness, farsightedness, astigmatism, and presbyopia to tailor exact prescriptions for everyday glasses, sunglasses, and computer screens.

2. Slit Lamp Biomicroscopy

Detailed high-magnification assessment of your cornea, eyelids, tear film, iris, and lens to detect early signs of dry eye, VOG irritation, cataracts, or infections.

3. Retinal & Pressure Screening

Non-invasive eye pressure checks (tonometry) and dilated retinal examinations to screen for glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy, macular degeneration, and vascular changes.

LOCALIZED EYE CARE

Eye Care for West Hawai‘i Environmental Conditions

Living on Hawai‘i Island brings unique environmental demands that impact eye comfort and health:

  • Intense Tropical UV Radiation: Chronic UV exposure increases long-term risk of pterygium (surfer’s eye), pinguecula, and early cataract formation.
  • Volcanic Smog (VOG): Sulfur dioxide and fine sulfate particles irritate tear film, worsening ocular burning, stinging, and dryness.
  • Trade Winds & Salt Air: Coastal winds accelerate tear evaporation and blow fine particles into the eyes.

Dr. Nguyen provides customized recommendations—from polarized UV-blocking lenses to targeted ocular surface therapy—designed for your Island lifestyle.

Comprehensive Eye Care FAQ

Most comprehensive eye examinations take approximately 45 to 60 minutes. This allows Dr. Nguyen sufficient time to test vision, assess eye coordination, examine anterior and posterior ocular health, and answer all of your questions without feeling rushed.

Pupil dilation is recommended for most adult comprehensive exams, especially if you have diabetes, high blood pressure, new floaters, or a personal or family history of retinal disease or glaucoma. Dilation allows Dr. Nguyen a complete, unobstructed view of your entire retina and optic nerve. If you are dilated, please bring sunglasses for the drive home.

For most healthy adults, an annual examination is recommended to detect silent ocular changes early. Patients with diabetes, glaucoma, high prescriptions, or chronic dry eye may require evaluations every 6 to 12 months as determined by Dr. Nguyen.

Yes. Kona Eye Care accepts major vision and medical insurance plans, including HMSA (Blue Cross Blue Shield of Hawaii), VSP (Vision Service Plan), Medicare, and other major carriers. Please contact our office to confirm your specific plan benefits.
