Do Not Ignore Sudden Eye Symptoms

When acute ocular symptoms strike, delay can lead to permanent vision loss or severe corneal scarring. Kona Eye Care provides prompt phone triage and same-day evaluation for urgent eye conditions.

Symptoms Requiring Immediate Evaluation:

  • Sudden Flashes of Light or Shower of New Floaters: Could indicate a posterior vitreous detachment or retinal tear/detachment requiring prompt intervention.
  • Severe Eye Pain or Deep Aching: Especially accompanied by nausea, headache, or colored halos around lights (possible acute angle-closure glaucoma).
  • Foreign Body Sensation: Metal shavings, sand, volcanic cinder, or debris stuck in the eye or under the eyelid.
  • Chemical Exposure: Splashes of household cleaners, pool chemicals, or agricultural sprays (flush immediately with clean water for 15 minutes, then call!).
  • Painful Red Eye in Contact Lens Wearers: High risk of rapidly progressing bacterial corneal ulcers (Pseudomonas / Acanthamoeba). Remove lenses immediately and bring them to your appointment.
  • Sudden Partial or Complete Loss of Vision: Like a curtain pulling over your vision or sudden blackout.

Urgent Eye Care FAQ

For most acute eye conditions—such as corneal scratches, foreign bodies, eye infections, flashes, floaters, and sudden blurry vision—an optometrist's office is equipped with specialized slit lamp biomicroscopes and diagnostic lenses that ERs often do not have. However, for severe penetrating eye injuries, chemical burns, or severe head trauma, go directly to the nearest emergency department or call 911.

Immediately flush your eye with clean saline solution or tap water continuously for at least 15 minutes before doing anything else. Hold your eyelids open under the faucet or shower. After flushing thoroughly, call our office or seek emergency medical care immediately.

Minor abrasions can heal quickly, but an open scratch leaves the eye highly vulnerable to aggressive bacterial infections that can cause permanent corneal scarring and vision loss within 24 to 48 hours. Professional evaluation and prescription protective drops ensure safe, rapid healing.
